Capitán Suizo : L’Élégance Naturelle au Cœur de Tamarindo

Capitán Suizo: A Swiss Jewel on Tamarindo Beach. In the world of boutique hotels, there is one that combines tropical elegance, ecological commitment and family spirit with disconcerting ease: the Capitán Suizo. This four-star establishment, nestled on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, is the fruit of the slightly crazy dream of a Swiss family, the Schmids, who swapped the Alpine peaks for the golden beaches of Tamarindo. And what an adventure!

A captain and the Swiss, a family epic

Why such a name? A subtle blend of homage to the island “El Capitán”, which sits opposite the hotel, and a nod to the Swiss origins of its founders – because yes, “Suizo” means “Switzerland” in Spanish. Enough to intrigue and seduce travelers in search of authenticity.

The story of Capitán Suizo is worthy of an adventure novel. In 1991, the Schmids arrived in Tamarindo with their two children, then aged 7 and 10, a dog named Max and a clear vision: to create a charming hotel where nature and comfort would be perfectly balanced. At the time, the village was a remote corner where telephones were rare, where garbage collection did not yet exist and where chickens, horses, cows and pigs roamed freely.

Without much experience in construction, but driven by a very Swiss rigor, the Schmid family took up the challenge. Foundations three times deeper than necessary, furniture handcrafted by local craftsmen (including woodwork made by local carpenters). Years of effort later, the hotel finally opened its doors in 1995. From the first stays, word of mouth did its work. The establishment quickly became a reference for sustainable tourism in Tamarindo.

An omnipresent and respected nature and unpretentious luxury

Here, there is no aggressive concrete or sanitized design. Capitán Suizo has chosen to blend into its lush environment. A wish deeply rooted in the Schmid family, who have a deep respect and love for nature and the animals that surround them (the Hotel Capitán Suizo also supports the Ministry of the Environment and Energy in caring for injured wild animals). The bungalows and suites are hidden under a thick layer of vegetation, where colorful birds, curious squirrels, mischievous monkeys and impassive iguanas coexist peacefully with the guests. Far from being intruders, these furry and feathered visitors are the real residents of the place.

The hotel makes a point of honor to operate in harmony with nature. The maintenance of the gardens follows an organic approach, the green spaces are 100% organic and the resources are managed sustainably. Finally, more than 95% of the employees are Costa Rican, often from the Guanacaste region. Because here, people count as much as the environment.

Don't expect ostentatious luxury, but rather natural elegance where every detail has been thought out for the well-being of guests. Spacious rooms open to the vegetation, warm and personalized service, idyllic beach where you can sip a cocktail while admiring the sun diving into the ocean... Capitán Suizo is an invitation to relax and reconnect with nature.

A strong mission and values

More than just a hotel , Capitán Suizo is a philosophy of life. Environmental commitment, respect for local culture, solidarity and ethics guide each of their actions. Their ambition? To become the most popular boutique hotel on the Pacific coast by 2025, while remaining true to its principles.

Since its creation, this hotel has been actively involved in the development of Tamarindo and neighboring towns, contributing to the improvement of the living conditions of their inhabitants. Today, this commitment is still reflected in the support for various projects, initiatives and financing implemented in collaboration with local associations, community organizations and public authorities.

In order to structure and strengthen their impact, the Capitán Suizo Hotel has developed a social development policy based on affirmative action. Through concrete programs in which the hotel participates, they work for the well-being of the community while ensuring that the socio-cultural impact of tourism is reduced.

As a member of Pack for a Purpose , they offer travelers the opportunity to support the local population in a concrete way. In fact, if you have some space in your luggage, you can bring school supplies: Capitán Suizo will distribute them to the schools that need them most.

In conclusion, Capitán Suizo is not just a hotel: it is an experience, a way of life where nature and humanity coexist in perfect harmony. Whether you are looking for relaxation, adventure or an authentic cultural immersion, this haven of peace will seduce you. Let yourself be carried away by the gentleness of the Pacific, the smiles of the Costa Ricans and the magic of a place that has preserved its soul. An unforgettable stopover awaits you in Tamarindo!
